Spain’s annual January raffle, El Niño, certainly knows how to pack a punch. As the country’s—and the world’s—second-largest lottery, the Spaniards have mastered New Year’s celebrations in style with a half-billion euro lottery raffle!
And with approximately 93% of winners from the world’s most-played lottery draw, El Gordo, taking part in the New Year’s raffle just weeks later, you can bet the Spaniards are having a Happy Holidays!
With 18 prize categories in all and millions of euros to be won, its popularity has never been in question.
There are innumerable reasons to get excited about New Year’s now. Great jackpot odds, overall estimated odds at an incredible 1/3, at least 70% of ticket sales contributing to the prize pool of around €600 million, and countless awards to be won and winners to be awarded—all thanks to our “little” friend—El Niño!
As the second-largest of Spain’s annual Sorteo Extraordinario raffles, El Niño shares the same draw formats and ticket-allocation methods as the other two. Raffle tickets (billetes) each contain a five-digit number. Each billete is printed multiple times in their own series (serie) due to the popularity of the raffle; the amount of serie produced varies year to year. Identical billetes will each have their own unique serie number. A décima is the equivalent of a tenth of a billete and can be purchased individually in exchange for a tenth of the prize amount. The product of serie and billete/décimas represent the grand total of shares at stake. Each five-letter number and each prize value are then matched together.
First created in 1941 and formalized in its present-day form in 1966 thanks to the popularity of El Gordo, Spain just couldn’t help themselves when it came to celebrating the New Year. And with Spain’s strong religious history, it’s little wonder that the lottery’s name is an ode to the holiday season’s roots.
Formally called Sorteo Extraordinario del Niño (literally, “Extraordinary Child Sweepstakes,” or more contextually accurate, “Extraordinary Little One Sweepstakes”), or more simply the Lotería del Niño (“The Children Lottery” or “The Little One Lottery”), it is colloquially referred to as El Niño, “The Little One.” El Niño is the Spanish language’s masculine version of the word “child,” and thus refers to the first (male) child, as in Jesus; so the lottery is named after the Adoration of the Magi. Of note, however, the main jackpot prize is still nicknamed El Gordo, just as it is in the Christmas raffle.
